Lake Ella

Sometimes construction projects yield intriguing surprises. Often times bad news, rather than good. A storm-water abatement program in north-central Tallahassee, implemented in the mid 1980s, has seen multiple benefits for local residents.
With continued residential growth during the late 70s and early 80s, the area's excess storm-water created flooding and lead to poor water quality for Lake Ella. Typically, the lake holds approximately 27 million gallons of water and is able to take an additional 9 million gallons of storm-water runoff during Florida's heavy thunderstorms. During the year the lake sees 250 million gallons of runoff, which is treated with alum, a substance used in municipal water treatment facilities.
This early morning view captures Lake Ella and Fred Drake Park reflections, with a mix of clouds and twinkling city lights. The lake and park offer a great combination, with satisfying the city's obligation to address storm-water concerns, and the community's enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings.
