Bennetts Mill Bridge

Kentucky's Route 7 follows Tygarts Creek southward from the town of South Shore and the Ohio River. Found along this route is a rare covered bridge that spans Tygarts Creek. Recently refurbished in 2004, the Bennetts Mill Bridge is the only remaining example of a Wheeler truss covered bridge. The refurbishment process, salvaging only 15 percent original material, used yellow pine timbers and poplar siding, with oak flooring and roofing shingles. Restoration topped the million dollar mark and the bridge is back in use today. The freshly painted roadside plaque makes no mention of refurb and stretches the bridge's length another 40 feet to a questionable 195 feet.
The Bennett name is associated with the original bridge builders, B.F. and Pramley Bennett, and their grist mill. The 155 foot bridge, found in northeastern Kentucky and Greenup County, was built in 1855 so that residents across the creek could access Bennett's mill, theoretically doubling his business.
