Fort Myers, known as the city of palms, dates back to the mid 1800s when the area's Fort Harvie was built along the Caloosahatchee River. The Florida
post became an important base during America's long war against the Seminole Natives. The fort was renamed in honor of Colonel Abraham C. Myers, leading to the city's name. Eventually the fort was abandoned after the Civil War, and its buildings were quickly stripped of their precious building material.
