Sunrise over St. Augustine

Lou Kellenberger Photography

Daylight breaks over Matanzas Bay and one of America's oldest cities. This wonderful scene looks toward Anastasia Island, a thin strip of land protecting the St. Augustine coast from the relentless Atlantic Ocean. The lure of staying young brought Ponce de Leon to St. Augustine area. Conquistadors followed, building fortresses along the coast. Although Ponce de Leon found no true fountain of youth, he recognized the mild climate that entices residents and travelers to the ancient city today.
Historic St. Augustine is a charming town with cobblestone streets, trolley tours, horse-drawn carriages and scenic cruises. The Gonzalez-Alverez home dating back to 1727, plus a 200 year old schoolhouse, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and two well preserved forts, the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas, add plenty to hold vistors' interests.
