Rangeley Lake

     Western Maine's Lakes and Mountains Region has all the makings of a memorable vacation. This view of Rangeley Lake offers a marvelous example of pure lake waters, set off by a range of majestic mountains. Here, summer fun is centered on lake activities. Imagine long days when kids do their best to keep going the whole day boating, fishing, canoeing and swimming, plus the simple things, like catching salamanders and minnows, and chasing after fireflies. Anglers also enjoy the challenges posed by the lake's wild trout and land-locked salmon. Canoeing and kayaking are other exciting ways to explore the area's coves and small lagoons.
     The Heritage Trust Organization has managed to secure nearly 13,000 acres of the Rangeley Lakes Region over the last 20 years. Working with willing parties, the Trust has maintained public land use for recreation, education and scientific study. Successful campaigns have included 45 miles of lakeshore and river frontage, 15 islands and the Bald Mountain area.
     This October view from a scenic overlook signals summer is all but over and crisp days of autumn are now a certainty. Called the Height of Land, the area on Route 17 is another Heritage Trust candidate for preservation. This is an extraordinary region where wild means an abundance of eagles, whitetail deer, moose, bear, and pristine lakes and streams that are treaming with wild trout and salmon. In the months ahead, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing and snowboarding will take advantage of the terrain and a statewide network of trails.
