Some might consider anything related to the outdoors with the word "mosquito" in the title a bit of a turn-off, but that doesn’t seem to deter visitors from northeastern Ohio’s Mosquito Lake State Park. Boasting 2,483 acres of land and a 7,850 acre lake, the park attracts hikers, sunbathers, fishermen and campers throughout warm weather months. Also, the park is a popular spot for winter sports, including ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Fishing enthusiasts are drawn from all over the state, as walleye, bass, northern pike and crappie are plentiful. Unlimited horsepower on the lake, plus five launch ramps make for easy access to all parts of the lake.
Plans for what would become the park began in the 1930s when a lake was formed by the damming of the Mosquito Creek to alleviate floods on the Mahoning, Beaver and Ohio rivers. The dam, completed in 1944, would also provide a water supply for the nearby city of Warren. Two years later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers turned management of recreation on the lake over to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This photo was captured at twilight looking over the north end of the lake, and the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area.
