Wind Point Lighthouse

Wind Point Light Station

Squeezed between the sprawling cities of Chicago and Milwaukee, Wind Point at Racine is a notable promontory on Lake Michigan's western shore. Because of the way it juts out into the lake, there's no surprise a lighthouse marks this Wisconsin headland. Just north of the Racine Harbor, the 108 foot brick Wind Point Light Station dates back to 1880. Foggy conditions on Lake Michigan also required a steam powered fog signal, broadcasting blasts up to 40 miles out on the lake.
This frosty scene reminds us that last century's light-keepers endured all types of weather, while ensuring the beacon was active whenever need. On a cold night, out on the water, there may be nothing more comforting than a beacon's reassurance that all navigational instruments on board are working properly.      Now, the Wind Point Light Light Station and tower, automated and freshly painted, can be viewed during open house days at certain times of the year.
During the winter holiday season, you'll find the Wind Point Lighthouse decked-out with a huge wreath and evergreens trimmed in colored lights. Although it creates a warm and cozy festive appearance, frigid temperatures and icy winds usher most Racine residents indoors where holiday celebrations are gathered around a cozy fireplace.
