Tracing the Potomac River from Great Falls, alongside America's Capital skyline and on to Mount Vernon, the George Washington Memorial Parkway leads to over two dozen historic highlights. Covering just 25 miles and requiring under an hour’s driving time, this scenic byway could keep visitors busy for days.
The northernmost stop on the byway, Great Falls, offers Virginia visitors a close up view of where the Potomac is forced through the narrow Mather Gorge. After a stopover on Theodore Roosevelt Island, a natural tribute to our 26th President and outdoorsman, no byway trip would be complete until the Arlington National Cemetery and the Arlington House were explored. After passing old town Alexandria, byway sightseers will be drawn to the Arlington Memorial Bridge and distant views of the Washington Monument across the river at the National Mall. Lighthouse fans may enjoy a few hours at the Jones Point Lighthouse. This beacon
has stood along the Potomac for over 150 years, guiding ships to the Washington Navy Yard. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1926 and is now under the care of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Spaced between scores of manmade landmarks, Fort Hunt Park and the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve offer a bit of history, plus a chance to stretch your legs in a natural setting.
The final byway stop at Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens is one of the byway’s most popular attractions. Here, thousands of guests are continuously ushered through President Washington's home of 45 years. After the mansion tour, guests can take a leisurely paced tour of the grounds, gardens and out-buildings.
