You won't find this part-time job in the want ads and it doesn't pay monetarily, but applicants are usually excited to take on this one-of-a-kind opportunity. Here at the Grand Traverse Light Station, caretakers must be in good physical shape, able to climb stairs and willing put in long hours working with the public. This one to two week volunteer job is part of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Keeper Program.
Here on the Leelanau Peninsula, volunteers spend their nights in the restored light-keeper's quarters, and during the day they escort guests around the light station, and climb with sightseers to the lantern room.
Michigan's Grand Traverse Lighthouse is the centerpiece at the Leelanau State Park. The tower and keeper's quarters, built in 1858, has been superbly restored and features shipwreck exhibits and a foghorn display. The lighthouse is located at the tip of Leelanau Peninsula and marks the entrance of Lake Michigan's
Grand Traverse Bay. Light-keeping may be the rewarding summer job you've been looking for. Interested? This unique maritime adventure is offered from April through December. Applicants may refer to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Keeper Program handbook for details.
