Shovel Point

Shovel Point

Photos by Ben Prepelka

Tettegouche, a relatively recent addition to the Minnesota State Parks system, was established in 1979. The 10,000 acre parcel was once part of the Alger-Smith Lumber Company. After the timber was cleared, their land interests were sold in 1910. The Cliff Climbersland was initially used for a hunting camp, the Tettegouche Club, and eventually changed ownership over the years. Finally, thanks to a few visionaries, the land was conveyed to the Minnesota Parks administration, creating a wonderful park site.
This view along the one mile stretch of park shoreline takes in the North Shore Palisades and Shovel Point. These rock cliffs date back over a billion years when molten rhyolite squeezed up through an immense rift that ran from today's Lake Superior all the way into Kansas. The lake's relentless wave action has chiseled away the rows of jointed columns, leaving this impressive rock face. A park trail borders the shoreline and offers dozens of scenic views all along the way.
