Do Tell Sculpture

Do Tell Sculpture - The Bascom Center for the Visual Arts, North Carolina

This spooky looking sculpture by artist Patrick Dougherty, entitled Do Tell, was created by using a technique called stick work. Earning numerous awards, Dougherty's sculptures have been displayed all around the globe.
Born in Oklahoma, Dougherty was raised in North Carolina and went on to earn degrees in English and Hospital & Health Administration. He later returned to the University of North Carolina to study art history and sculpture. During the 1980s, Dougherty combined his love of nature, art and carpentry skills to create his first stick work, which he called Maple Body Wrap. Encouraged at his showing at the North Carolina Biennial Artist's Exhibition, Dougherty went on to create larger pieces, some requiring truck loads of saplings.
Here at the Bascom, a Center for the Visual Arts, the Do Tell sculpture was built in 2010 with the help of 75 volunteers. Taking three weeks and 800 hours of volunteer time, the 15 sided sculpture is made of maple, beech, birch, elm, ash and hazel saplings. This mysterious creature, with scary eyes and mouth-like door openings, invites its viewers to circle around it and enter inside in order to fully enjoy the work of art.
