Hyannis, a bustling harbor town and economic center of Cape Cod, is best known as the home of the Kennedys. Often called Capital of the Cape, American businessman and political figure Joseph Kennedy enjoyed six acres on Nantucket Sound with his wife Rose Kennedy and sons, Senator Bobby Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy. Their youngest son, longtime Senator Ted Kennedy, continued living at the Kennedy compound until his death in 2009.
Along with the Kennedys, Cape Cod is also known for its world famous beaches. Coupled up with a string of Barnstable County beaches is a 40 mile stretch of pristine coastline protected as Cape Cod National Seashore.
Keyes Memorial Beach is a excellent representative of Cape Cod's sandy beaches. Noted for exceptional water quality and central location, summer tourists flock to Hyannis after Memorial Day. In addition to coastal beaches, visitors may enjoy area golf courses, maritime museums, amusement centers and harbor cruises.
Even though the original movie Jaws is over 35 years old, somehow its widespread notoriety lingers and a few beachgoers struggle with their primal fear of sharks. Most public officials offer this advice: swim at patrolled beaches, stay away from seals and avoid swimming near schools of fish. Even though last month's great white sightings in Chatham are the first since 1936, some cannot help but think of Jaws when entering the water.
