Although it’s less than two miles long, Beale Street is one of the major tourist attractions in Memphis. First created by developer Robertson Topp, many black traveling musicians began performing on Beale Street at the close of the Civil War. By the end of the century, additions of the Grand Opera House (Orpheum), Robert Church Park, clubs, restaurants, shops and a form of music called the Memphis Blues attracted attention nation-wide.
