Ownership of the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse was turned over to Lighthouse Preservation Society in April, 2005. The society, assembled for lighthouse preservation, formed a plan for a two and a half million dollar refurbishment. Already one hundred years old, the Romanesque style structure, often described as a gingerbread house, is now destined to retain its original look and continue to light the harbor and entrance to the Maumee River.
In 1901, the Army Corps of Engineers created an island along the Toledo Harbor shipping channel by dropping a huge container of stone. The island was capped with a concrete, a supporting base for the new lighthouse. The keeper's quarters were topped with a 13 foot diameter tower and lantern room.
A phantom lighkeeper, plus a fully dressed mannequin, Sarah, have been standing guard ever since the Ohio light was automated in 1965.
