Akron’s Stan Hywet manor house, completed in 1915, is said to be one of the finest examples of Tudor Revival architecture in America. This mid-town marvel was built by one of the co-founders of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Frank A Seiberling. Now, knowing the owner, the Stan Hywet (Stan Hee-wit) name begins to sound a bit confusing. Actually, Stan Hywet is not someone's name, but an old English term for hewn stone, alluding to the mansion’s grand stonework. In fact, the 64,500 square foot home used such a vast supply of building materials, a rail spur was added to bring in brick, steel and a variety of hardwoods.
In order to design this one-of-a-kind project, the Seiberlings employed the services of Cleveland’s Charles S. Schneider, and landscape architect, Warren Manning. The 65 room mansion, radiating old world splendor, is noted for its intricate details and fine craftsmanship. The gardens at Stan Hywet Hall at one time covered more than 1000 acres, including a formal English garden, Japanese garden and a wildflower meadow.
Today, the mansion and well manicured grounds are open to the public. The original carriage house now doubles as a gift shop and restaurant.
