Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse

Photo by Jack Ryan - zenfolio gallery

One of the most familiar places on North Carolina's Outer Banks is the town of Nags Head. Just a stones throw to the west is Roanoke Island, sandwiched between the mainland and the Outer Banks. Pictured here is the island's newly constructed Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. Manteo, the island's main city, saw the townspeople come together on a plan to build a replica of the Roanoke Light. Their idea focused on the last lighthouse in service there, that marked the southern entrance of Croaton Sound, from 1877 until 1955. This light-station was sold off to a private owner, and during its move, the building tipped on its barge and slipped into sea. Two previous beacons lost to weather incidents also marked this narrow channel, with service dates from 1831 to 1877.
The dedication ceremony for this new lighthouse took place on September, 2004. The replica, a cottage style light-station supported on screwjacks, graces Manteo's waterfront, on the shoreline of Shallowbag Bay.
