Last; century's main mode of land transportation has become one of today’s
vacation highlights. For all age groups there’s always been a deep fascination with trains, and youngsters are still thrilled to get a firsthand look at the controls of a powerful locomotive and ride the rails.
Here in the north Georgia mountains, not far from Atlanta, a 26 mile train excursion transports passengers along the beautiful Toccoa River and through the Cohutta Mountains. The excursion train runs from the depot in Blue Ridge, through the historic Murphy Junction to McCaysville, Georgia. During the layover, Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad guests can walk over the Blue Line to stretch their legs in Tennessee.
The original Blue Ridge Railroad route was first established in 1886. The majority of rail
usage enhanced mining and lumbering operations, and eventually connected with large cities in both Georgia and Tennessee.
Today, as the railway makes its way through the colorful Cohutta Mountains, the train passes hillsides brightened by springtime mountain laurel and wildflowers, early summer’s rhododendron blossoms, and fall's brilliant foliage. The railroad continues through the winter, with special runs where passengers enjoy carol sing-alongs, Christmas activity books, and old Saint Nick himself. A special trip features a nighttime excursion through Santa’s Village in Copper Basin.
