Manassas Stone Bridge

The morning was hot, still and dry. It was summer, July 21st, 1861. Here in Manassas, Virginia, not far from the U.S. Capitol, the burst of mortar fire broke the calm at 5:15. The first major land battle of the Civil War had begun. Union troops launched a diversionary attack across the Stone Bridge over Bull Run. Well before dawn, the majority of the Pope's Union columns gathered upstream, hoping to outflank the Confederates at Sudley Ford. Their surprise attack was slow to develop.
