Folly - an Old English word meaning an area of dense foliage.

     Charleston, located near the midpoint of South Carolina's coastline, is one of the oldest cities in the southeast. Founded in 1670, the city's rich heritage is well preserved in its architecture, customs and everyday life. The Charleston Historic District stands as a model of preservation, with over 30 buildings recognized as a National Historic Landmarks.
     If the beach sounds a little more exciting than historic architecture, you're still in luck when visiting Charleston. Folly Beach Welcome Sign - South Carolina Just a few minutes from the city is Charleston County's Edge of America. Known to map makers as Folly Beach, this casual beach community is all about sand, surf and sun. Here on the Atlantic Ocean, Folly Beach has entertained beach-goers since the 1920s. The Atlantic Pavilion, boardwalk, pier and Ocean Front Hotel were the highlights on this resort island.
     Although replaced several times since the 30s, the Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier extends out into the Atlantic 1045 feet and is the focal point on Folly Beach. With massive clean-up and restoration efforts after Hurricane Hugo, Folly Beach residents and visitors may once again enjoy surfing, fishing, birding and beautiful sunrises over the ocean. From the northeast end of the island, lighthouse fans will enjoy a view of the marooned Morris Island Lighthouse.
