High Falls State Park, located closeby Interstate 75 (Exit 198), is about an hour's drive south of Atlanta. The 1000 acre High Falls Park is largely taken up by a 650 acre lake created by the High Falls Dam. Centered on the Towaliga River, the High Falls name comes from a broad waterfall that cascades nearly a 100 feet over granite ledges. A short quarter mile trail leads downstream from High Falls Road to the falls area.
     During the early 1800's, the area around the river was developed into a prosperous industrial community. Home to a shoe factory, grist mill, blacksmith shop, mercantile store, hotel and cotton gin, the town quietly faded when a major railroad bypassed the area in 1880.
     Today, the park features campsites, playground, swimming pool, and a large picnic area alongside the lake. Easy boat access and boat rentals provide loads of summer recreation fun. Miniature golf, Geocaching, pedal boats and swimming add plenty of entertainment for all. Largemouth bass, crappie and striped bass lure in anglers from around the state. Motor restrictions (less than 10 hp) have reduced fishing pressure on the lake, resulting in excellent catches.
