A group of 14 communities line the banks of the Fox River, making up a large metropolitan area called the Fox Cities. Including the town of Neenah, this string of fast growing towns trace their roots to the late 1700s, when the French and Dutch began Wisconsin settlements.
This chilly winter scene, with its coating of ice and snow, almost appears to be a study in black and white. The ice covered snow presents a reminder of Wisconsin's harsh winters, here on land as well as at sea. The white stucco Neenah (Kimberly Point) Lighthouse was built in 1945, marking the entrance to the Fox River at Neenah. The light-station, also designed as a comfort station, was constructed of block and brick, rising 40 feet over Lake Winnebago.
The Kimberly Point park land surrounding the light-station was donated to the city of Neenah in 1929 by Helen Kimberly Stuart (of Kimberly-Clark fame). In 1944, Mr. J.C. Kimberly (also of Kimberly-Clark fame and fortune) donated funds for lighthouse construction, the centerpiece of Kimberly Point Park.
