New Jersey's Morris County Park Commission was formed in 1956 to manage 38 sites spread over 18,000 acres. Along with the county's recreational spaces, three standout historic sites are preserved and promoted by the park commission.
Morris County's cultural history and rich heritage can be discovered at the Speedwell Factory Building, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, and the Cooper Grist Mill along the Black River. The Factory Building at Speedwell is a site where the telegraph was perfected and successfully demonstrated. Considered the birthplace of the telegraph, exhibits include the famous communication invention by Samuel F. B. Morse. A seven acre National Historic Landmark also preserves the Stephen Vail Estate, owner of the Speedwell Iron Works. In Morristown, visitors are introduced to a century old farm, where staff members are dressed in period attire. Visitors at the Fosterfields Historical Farm may pitch in and help with butter churning, corn cracking and harness cleaning. Special events make this educational center fun for both children and adults.
Travel back in time to Milltown’s thriving community on the Black River. During the mid 19th century, the town's rich iron ore deposits, vast tracts of timber, fertile farmlands and connecting roadways all helped the flourishing town. Today, visitors are invited to tour Cooper Grist Mill, once the center of town. Built in 1826, the grist mill is the only restored water powered mill in New Jersey. Guided mill tours show how the raw power of the Black River can turn 2000 pound mill stones. Guests are invited to experience the working mill and discover the details of Morris County Heritage.
