As the John Muir Trail journey continues southward through Kings Canyon National Park, the peaceful march is interrupted by local hikers entering from the Woods Creek Trail. The only access to King Canyon is through the Monarch Wilderness, and along the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. Local backcountry access begins at Road's End in King Canyon National Park. From here, would be adventurers don their hiking gear and begin on a six day, 44 mile loop hike that leads through Paradise Valley, along Woods Creek, southward to Rae and Kearsarge lakes, and back to the trail head following Bubbs Creek.
