Seeing double? Most likely your eye sight is fine. Once again a pair of covered bridges span the Ottauquechee River just above the North Hartland Dam. Originally, two town lattice designed bridges were built in 1870. The east span was taken out by high water during a 1938 hurricane, replaced by a modern reinforced concrete bridge. Over the years the newer, concrete bridge began to fail. The proactive townspeople voiced their wishes, and with the State of Vermont's approval, a matching covered bridge was built. The new structure was lifted into place on October, 2001, creating quite a story. Although the new bridge has no name, the old bridge is still referred to as the Willard Bridge, making it convenient naming the pair, the Willard Twins. |
