Because of its irregular shape, it would be hard to pinpoint the geographical center of Florida without some help from the experts. But after a brief look at a map you may say that Mount Dora and Lake County may be close. Famous for the Harris Chain of Lakes, Lake County prides itself as a boater's paradise, plus its place among the top ten bass fishing lakes in Florida. For landlubbers as well, a day trip to Mount Dora can't be beat. A city with a year-long calendar of festivals, traveling musicals, craft fairs, art shows and music tributes, there is always some type of entertainment on tap. Sometimes it's just a fun to stroll along Lake Dora, walk out to Florida's only official inland lighthouse at Grantham Point, and enjoy a stay at the historic Lakeside Inn.
Here, close to Lake Dora, the century old historic district is filled restaurants, cafes, art galleries, book stores, antique shops, historic homes and boutiques. After a walking tour in town, a stop for ice cream and a visit to the Donnelly House, Mount Dora visitors may enjoy a trip aboard the Orange Blossom Cannonball. From the Mount Dora Depot, passengers are treated to an early American train ride on the Tavares, Eustis & Gulf Railroad. Making an hour long run from Mount Dora to Eustis, the vintage train is pulled by a wood-burning steam locomotive. The 2-6-0 Mogul was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907, pulling for various southern railway lines. Now the centerpiece of the Tavares, Eustis & Gulf rail line, #2 pulls a line of century old passenger cars built in the early 1900s. These open-air cars provide all thrills, sights and sounds of a classic train trip. A train isn't complete with a red caboose, and #5404 is another quality restoration, first built in 1918 for the St. Louis & Southwestern Railroad. Usually seen running on the weekend, check the schedule for times and dates, and advance tickets are recommended.
